Spring Shots (March 7, 2004), Exterior
One of the more unusual aspects of this house and property is the proliferation of various plants and plantings about the yard. The prior owners planted heavy beds full of perennials and rows of azaleas, camellias and rhododendrons. Although some attempt was made by the owners initially to record the types and variatals planted, much of the plantings were unrecorded. These are my initial attempts at recording the plantings, photos taken early to late morning in March, 2004. All these images are of Camillias found in the back yard.

Pink/Fuscia medium single bloom Camellia with yellow center. This appears to have been an opportunist cast from one of the larger bushes.

White medium semidouble Camellia with light-yellow center. This appears to have been another opportunist cast from one of the larger bushes. I've under-pruned this Camellia for a more tree-like effect.

Red medium semidouble Camellia with yellow center. This original planting is gigantic, towering over 16 feet from the base and about 8 feet in diameter. I've really under pruned this Camellia for a more tree-like effect. Prolific bloomer.

As with all the Camellias in the backyard, the plan is to prune this one to a tree-from. Prolific bloomer (the photo does not do this one justice, as it blooms later in the season). The blooms are spectacular.

Two Camellias outside of fenced yard, behind house
Red medium semidouble bloom Camellia with yellow center. This appears to have been another opportunist cast from one of the larger bushes. This one has been trimmed to a tree-from and I may attempt to move them (there are two) as they are planted too close to the house and fense. Prolific bloomers.

Front and Side Yard Plantings
Some items of interests that survived from the prior owner's records is a plot of the front yard, with numbers indetifying the various Camellias, Azaleas and Rhododendrons planted. The list is actually quite detailed, with variety, number and short description. Some are marked as "dead" with a replacement number indicated (I've omitted the dead from the list below). I'm not too sure about the spelling (the original list is handwritten). Another item is a 1972 printing of "Rhododendrons and Azaleas" by Sunset books and "Azalea Culture for Georgia Gardeners" 1969 published by UGA College of Agriculture/Athens. Unfortunately most of the Rhodies seem to have perished, probably due to the drought conditions in Georgia over the past few years. I'm attempting to ensure that those that remain will outlive my stay in this house. I'm also using various means of propagation to ensure that what is currently here will have a legacy that extends beyond my current generation.
