6361 XRG-1 Reentry Glider with Major Matt Mason

One of the toughest MMM items is this packaging variation, which includes both the XRG-1 Reentry Glider and a Major Matt Mason figure with helmet. These items were presented on a modified 6360 XRG-1 Reentry Glider card, with the Major mounted to the card back on a yellow-backed blister. Only a handful of these have turned up. The example pictured above was scanned from an issue of Tomarts Toy Magazine.

Packaging:
The backer-card is made of corrugated cardboard printed on all sides (in black, white and blue ink), except the front which has applied a full-color, process-printed label. The card measures 18 " by 21 5/8" by 4 5/8". Copyright is 1970. The card reads: "Flying Major Matt Mason with XRG-1 Reentry Glider" - "Streaks Through Space" - "Reenters Earth's Atmosphere" - "Glides and Lands Safely on Earty" - "Flies Only with a Mattel Astronaut"

Instructions:
Mattel #6360-0920 XRG-1 Re-entry Glider
Mattel #6360-0920 XRG-1 Re-entry Glider Back

Mattel Catalog Specifications:
Unknown. This variation is not listed in any Mattel Catalogs that I currently own or know about. It may have been a department store exclusive, like the Astro Trac Missile Convoy (for Sears).

John's Notes:
This is one of the rarest Major Matt Mason playsets. I have not been able to find a listing for this item in any Mattel or department store catalog. It is unknown where this item was distributed, making it a rarity by any standard. Eventually more information will turn up, but at present, it remains an explained mystery.
